Knowing the Orixá

Oxalá

Oxalá

Oxalá, the lord of peace and wisdom, venerated among the Yoruba with deep respect and devotion. In his immaculate majesty, he is known as Obatalá, in the Yoruba language, reflecting his position as the firstborn of the Orixás, the one who preceded the very creation of the world.

They say that Oxalá emerged from Olorun, the divine celestial kingdom, molded with white clay by the meticulous care of the supreme gods. His creation carries the purity of whiteness, symbolizing innocence and divine perfection. And so, Oxalá became the primordial architect, shaping existence from the primordial chaos.

In Yoruba culture, Oxalá is revered as the father of all Orixás, the holder of the wisdom that guides the destinies of mortals. His silver staff, a symbol of authority, represents the peace he brings to the universe. His importance transcends time, as he is the creator, the divine legislator who establishes the cosmic order.

Ancient stories tell of their benevolent interventions in the lives of human beings. In one of these legends, Oxalá descended to Earth, carrying with him the gourd of creation, spilling water and forming rivers, seas and lakes. He also brought agriculture, teaching mortals how to cultivate the land for sustenance.

Today, Oxalá is remembered on Thursdays, associated with purity, creation and harmony. The colors white and silver represent him, symbolizing the light and peace he offers to the world. His energy is quiet but powerful, guiding those who seek balance and clarity in their lives.

Religious syncretism, a result of the African diaspora, merged Oxalá with different deities in different cultures. In Brazil, he is often identified with Senhor do Bonfim, a Catholic representation. This fusion reflects the ability to adapt and preserve Yoruba culture in distant lands.

In each prayer addressed to Oxalá, devotees seek not only inner peace, but also wise guidance to face the challenges of the world. Thus, Oxalá remains as the wise patriarch, looking down on us from the celestial kingdom, always willing to guide those who seek harmony and light.
